The coconut tree is known as the "tree of life" by the Pacific Islanders mainly because it is highly valued and used as a remedy for numerous sicknesses. It is full of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and healing properties. It contains 60% of the essential fatty acids need by the body, medium chain fatty acids. These are not stored in the body as fat, but converted to energy.
The bad reputation this tropical oil got in the past was due to it being tested on hydrogenated coconut oil, not organic. Also because of the high amount of saturated fats. However, these are the "good" saturated fats that do no harm to the body. There is a big difference because when the oil goes through this process, it loses its important properties.
This oil has been used by people in the Asian populations for many years and just recently it's been noted as the healthiest oil in the world. All oils contain short, medium, or long chain fatty acids. The "medium" chain fatty acids in organic coconut oil is what makes it different from the rest because it's not stored as fat, but as energy.
Many of the vegetable oils on our supermarket shelves consist of long chain fatty acids, which are the "bad" ones. Sixty percent of organic coconut oil consist of the medium chain fatty acids, and one in particular is lauric acid. This lauric acid gives the oil its many anti-properties: anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial. There are many health benefits associated with these properties.
To start, it protects the heart from cardiovascular disease, lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing the good cholesterol (HDL). It also works to improve brain function and fight off bacteria and viruses. Organic coconut oil kills the viruses that lead to measles, influenza, AIDS, Hepatitis C, and also the bacteria that causes urinary tract infection, ulcers, throat infections, and pneumonia.
The anti-fungal properties fight off yeast infections, diaper rash, thrush, and athlete's foot. When used externally, it's really great for skin and hair health. Continued use will help with anti-aging (wrinkles and sagging skin). It can be applied to burns and cuts to aid in healing and used as a remedy for skin problems such as psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, and eczema.
When applied to your hair, it helps the hair to grow and stay strong and healthy with lots of shine. One interesting fact about organic coconut oil is that it helps to cure dandruff when applied to the scalp and kills lice and their eggs. It's great when used as a conditioner or treatment for damaged hair. It can even be left on the hair as a deep treatment for dry and damaged hair.
Organic coconut oil is really good for your dental health. It helps to prevent cavities, cure bad breath, treat oral infection, treatment for mouth or gum disease, and cleanses the teeth. Another really big reason to love this stuff is that it helps promote weight loss by increasing the metabolism and giving you lots of energy. It is easily digested by the body helping it to burn more energy.
